Find information about Portland State University engineering major, registering in a technical degree program, and taking practice exams for free online. Which college degrees offer you the best chances of finding employment after graduation? If you complete the engineering major, for example, there are a variety of specializations that may appeal to you such as alternative energy, construction project management, or mechanical engineering. Further, due to advances in engineering technology, there is a growing shortage of engineering major graduates, and skilled engineers in general.
Mechanical engineering degrees typically take four to five years to complete, and result in a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng), Bachelor of Science (BSc or BS), or Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (BME). In the US, most undergraduate mechanical engineering programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Mechanical engineering programs include courses on composites, thermodynamics, engine design, hydraulics, control theory, robotics, and computer-aided design (CAD). In addition to the core mechanical engineering curriculum, many mechanical engineering programs offer more specialized programs and classes, such as control systems, cryogenics, fuel technology, biomechanics, vibration, and optics. The median annual income of mechanical engineers in the US workforce was $80,580, highest when working for the government ($92,030), and lowest in education ($57,090).
Many mechanical engineering companies have begun to incorporate computer-aided engineering (CAE) programs into their existing processes, including 2D and 3D solid modeling computer-aided design (CAD), enabling faster and more exhaustive visualization of products. Other CAE programs commonly used by mechanical engineers include product lifecycle management (PLM), and analysis tools such as finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). Further, automation in the form of industrial robots allow businesses to save money on manufacturing costs, and ensure precision quality control.

Chemical Engineering Courses
Chemical engineers apply the principles of chemistry and biology to solve problems in the production of chemicals, fuel, pharmaceuticals, and many other products. They design processes and equipment for large-scale manufacturing, plan and test production methods and byproducts treatment, and direct facility operations. Most chemical engineers have a bachelors degree in chemical engineering, as well as internship experience. They may spend a large portion of their work day at industrial plants, refineries, and other locations, where they monitor or direct operations or solve onsite problems. The average salary for chemical engineers was $97,360 as reported the US Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2015.Biomedical engineers to design equipment, devices, computer systems, and software used in healthcare. Bachelors degree programs in bioengineering include extensive lab-work, and courses such as fluid mechanics, computer programming, circuit design, and biomaterials. Accredited programs also include substantial training in engineering design, and practical internships in medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturing companies. The median annual wage for biomedical engineers was $86,220 in May 2015. Further, employment of biomedical engineers is projected to grow 23% in the next decade, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam should be taken immediately after earning a bachelors degree from an ABET-accredited program. Engineers who pass this exam are called engineers in training (EIT), or engineer interns. After meeting work experience requirements, engineer interns can attempt a second certifying exam, called the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam. Thereafter, acquisition of a professional engineering license enables management of junior engineers, the ability to sign off on engineering projects, and provide services directly to the public. Wages vary by employer and location. Aside from salary, most engineering jobs include excellent benefits, as well as retirement plans.Links below are updated hourly: | Starting Salary (up to) |
